DNV GL has instituted a program of “Best Practice” Awards to recognize innovative and effective implementations of ISDS requirements and recently awarded to SHI.
DNV GL’s Offshore Standard D-203; Integrated Software Dependent Systems (ISDS), imposes process requirements on system integrators (typically the Builders) and suppliers of mobile offshore drilling units, in order to improve the dependability of these systems. ISDS requirements are flexible, so builders have considerable freedom to define solutions that best fit their business needs and existing processes.
Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) implemented the Software Modification Management (SMM) system as a tool for recording, tracking, evaluating, and approving software changes as required by ISDS. SMM system is internet-based so it is readily accessible to system integrator, supplier, owner, and class society personnel on-board or ashore. The system has been implemented for the Statoil CAT J project. SMM system is an example of the application of Information and Computer Technology to improve shipbuilding project performance. SHI estimates that the system has saved man power of effort in managing software changes on CAT J. DNV GL recognizes the SHI Software Modification Management system as a “Best Practice” for change tracking in ISDS projects.
