Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU

Ensuring functionality and performance of radio equipment

Radio Equipment Directive 2014/53/EU came into effect in June 2016 and it supersedes Radio and Telecommunications Terminal Equipment Directive (R&TTE).

It covers most products which use the radio frequency spectrum and it is applicable to all electrical and electronic devices that intentionally emit and receive radio waves at frequencies below 3000 GHz.

Why is the Radio Equipment Directive important?

In order for radio equipment to be sold in various markets worldwide, it is necessary to ensure that the product is compliant with local regulation.

When it comes to EU market, each product placed on it has to be CE marked (adequately assessed, with the aim to prove that the product complies to all essential requirements of applicable directives).

Manufacturers whose products are already compliant to R&TTE Directive will have to comply with new RED Directive till June 2017.

Testing and certification

Radio frequency (RF) testing is performed with regards to the risks presented by radio equipment. It simulates functionality and performance of product to ensure that it will not interfere with other users of the radio frequency spectrum.

According to essential requirements of this Directive, it is also necessary to verify that the product is constructed to ensure:

  • the protection of health and safety of persons and domestic animals and the protection of property, including the objectives with respect to safety requirements set out in LVD Directive 2014/35/EU, but with no voltage limit applying;
  • an adequate level of electromagnetic compatibility as set in EMC Directive 2014/30/EU.

To comply with the Directive, the manufacturer, his representative or the person responsible for putting the product on the market must ensure and declare that the product satisfies the applicable requirements.

CE marking represents a visible consequence of a whole process comprising conformity assessment in a broad sense. It is important both to customers and public authorities.

How can we help?

We provide services for conformity assessment. We can also assist to perform the required tests, evaluation of test results and certification of equipment and production.
