DNV Software's Environmental Performance System (EPS) helps transform multiple environmental data sources into 'best efforts'.
Governments and companies are facing increasing pressure to be responsible, transparent, and accountable for how they perform in relation to sustainable development. In fact, we realise that integration of environmental data sources and all kinds of consumers will only be understood if the societies are able to monitor and learn from the processes. DNV Software has recently enhanced and developed key software enablers with the purpose of strengthening the Environmental Performance System (EPS) for future needs. The enhanced concept of an environmental helpdesk has been established with focus on supporting the following macro workflows: Efficient capturing of environmental data, environmental accounting, benchmarking services, best practices and efforts, frequently asked questions (FAQs) and trending. Key enhancements are:
Providing efficient means of capturing environmental data from arbitrary sources of data. This implies that new sources of data can rapidly be plugged in to the Environmental Portal and their data easily captured.
Providing customer-specific processing and publishing of data. This implies that new services that perform custom transformation, filtering, aggregation and analysis/statistics can easily be plugged in. This will enable new data to be published as and when needed, and will provide unique levels of responsiveness. The key software enablers – Brix Rules and Brix Data Transformation Service – are part of the overall portal architecture.

Brix Rules
allows business logic, like best practices, policy, rules or regulations, to be managed outside of the software using them. This allows domain experts to be hands on with respect to how best practices and policies are implemented in the portal. In the context of the Environmental Portal, Brix Rules will be used to encode and execute rules for validation and processing of data, including filtering, transformation and aggregation of data. In addition, Brix Rules will be used to encode best practices and management of FAQs.
Brix Data Transformation Service
enables new data sources to be plugged in to a portal and their data to be transformed to a common format used by the portal. Data transformation rules are encoded and executed by Brix Rules. In the context of the Environmental Portal, Brix Data Transformation Service will secure efficient data capturing from multiple sources. Each environmental data source will be transformed to a prevailing accounting format – enabling efficient benchmarks.
Environmental Performance System
Already we offer an Environmental Performance System (EPS) to the market. EPS is a web-based solution that helps companies monitor their environmental performance, including their CO2 footprint. EPS supports international standards such as ISO 14001. Current EPS customers include the Norwegian State Railway (NSB), Golar Management, Fred Olsen Marine Service and our own parent company, DNV. Although the shipping industry is not included in the current system for CO2 emission quota trading, it is only a matter of time before this changes, when the industry will have to meet low-emission standards. A proactive approach is necessary. This is also true for future schemes for NOx emission fees. The more accurate information available to the industry, the better prepared it is to meet the new regulations
