The IACS Common Structural Rules (CSR) entered in to force 1st of April 2006. The new standard applies to all double hull oil tankers above 150 meters in length.

Any Benefits of the new Rules?
The new Rules will allow shipbuilders and designers to work with one common set of Rules, instead of one set from each class society.
- The intention of the new Rules is to encourage the design and construction of robust oil tankers and to eliminate competition on scantlings.
- Stringent and clarified requirements to critical areas
- The minimum fatigue design life has been upgraded from the 20 year worldwide trading to 25 year North Atlantic environment.
- The Rules include design standards for the net scantlings of a vessel meaning that the renewal thicknesses for the in service time is checked and known at the newbuilding stage.
- The corrosion additions that have been established takes into account the location and the environment to which the structural member’s surface is subjected
CSR for Oil tankers - software solutions by DNV
The new Rule requirements introduce a radical shift towards more computerisation of the rule formulations and structural assessment. As a response to this, Nauticus Hull - the leading class software is completely re-engineered to support the new Rules. In January 2006, DNV was the first Classification Society to launch complete software support for CSR for Oil tankers. During April 2006, DNV again make a new release of its Nauticus Hull software available to the industry, this time with an even wider coverage of the latest Rules updates and clarifications (more information about 'software solutions by DNV').

Staying in control of maintenance is good business, and the Hull Inspection Manual (HullMan) from DNV is a practical approach to implementation of best-practise for ship maintenance. HullMan is developed in close cooperation with the ship manager. It utilises DNV’s extensive hull knowledgebase and incorporates the ship manager’s maintenance standard and work processes. HullMan is part of DNV's Hull Integrity Management program (more information about Hull Inspection Manual).
