Classification is a special type of certification particularly applied to confirm that the maritime structures and facilities comply with requirements. Classification implies that requirements are set by the classification society, i.e. the same third party that performs the classification. The requirements are specified in the DNV Rules.

DNV is authorised by more than 80 flag administrations to carry out statutory certification on their behalf. Our international network of approval centres and more than 300 survey stations in more than 100 countries are essential for our certification activities.

As part of classification, DNV also certifies all materials, components and systems relevant to safe operation and quality of ships. Our design assessment, type approvals and production assessments ensure that systems and components are fit for their purpose.
As a part of our pre-contract offering, we provide services and tools to assist in early stage ship design and fleet/chain improvement. Our aim is to avoid sub-optimal solutions and improve particularly the energy efficiency, by evaluating a single ship design either alone or in relation to its perfomance in the entire maritime logistics chain.

DNV provides a wide range of consulting services within commercial, operational, and technology management for the maritime industry.

DNV Petroleum Services (DNVPS) is the foremost name in marine fuel management, commanding over 70 per cent world-wide market share for contracted Fuel Quality Testing services. We are also a major provider of Bunker Quantity Surveys.
