Subsystems and components
DNV has strong expertise with key wind turbine subsystems and turbine components that pose particular challenges for the wind industry. Some examples include:Blades,
including aerodynamics, composite structural design, manufacturing and testingDrive train,
including extensive internal and external research on gearbox durability and reliabilityControl systems,
including advanced programmingOffshore structures,
including foundations and transformer platforms.
In addition, DNV offers a technology qualification process for new or improved technology or components. Technology qualification is a systematic risk-based process that clearly documents and provides confidence in the performance of new technology.
World-class tools and laboratories
With decades of experience in advanced modeling and analysis, DNV offers wind-specific capabilities using software such as the multi-body software MSC.ADAMS to construct geometries and allow degrees of freedom that far exceed the capabilities of other commonly used codes. DNV’s offshore capabilities include use of hydrodynamics codes to simulate dynamic loads not only of cutting edge designs but also in extremely challenging locations.
DNV also offers laboratory services within the areas of materials technology and qualification of components and systems. Our experience in laboratory testing is extensive, and the laboratories are an important part of the technology base in DNV. We emphasize combining the testing expertise with theoretical knowledge of materials, object competence, failure modes and mechanisms.
DNV’s laboratories are located in Oslo and Bergen in Norway, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia, Aberdeen in the UK and Dublin, Ohio, in the USA. In addition, DNV is part owner of the BLAEST wind turbine blade test facility in Denmark.
DNV's commitment to integrity
DNV is committed to a rightful, independent, and impartial service to all our customers. We provide type certification for turbine models through our wind certification center in Copenhagen and technical advisory services through our other wind energy units worldwide. We carefully review assignments to ensure that our engineering work does not provide a conflict with our turbine certification activities. All certification activities have been and will continue to be conducted by personnel in our Copenhagen office; these employees and their associated work products are not shared with personnel in our other offices. Above all, we strive to build trust and confidence between all parties and conduct ourselves in a transparent manner.
